Healthy Body Harbors Healthy Eyes
Fresh fruits & green vegetables provide Anti-oxidants which prevent cataract, Retinal degenerations, etc. in old age.
Fruits, green leafy vegetables, Papaya, tomatoes, milk, fish are rich in vitamin-A and good for eyes.
Eye Hygiene
- Avoid rubbing, touching of eyes with dirty hands.
- Don’t share towels, hanky, and glasses.
- Avoid physical contact with Eye-flu patient.
- Contact lens users must wash hands before handling them.
Eye Injuries
- Injuries are the most common cause of acquired blindness in childhood.
- Play safe on Holi & Diwali.
- Avoid looking at solar-eclipse, arc-welding with naked eyes.
- Wear only UV-filtering sun-glasses (UV rays cause cataract & many other eye diseases).
- Polycarbonate glasses are shatter proof.
- Play safe during cricket, badminton, lawn-tennis, etc.
- Sometimes a simple looking injury may cause blindness.
Computer Strain
- Excessive computer work without break or adequate blinking causes eye-strain, headache & dryness.
- Radiation from computer is a myth.
- Keep monitor at slightly lower level than eyes.
Mobile Phone Strain
- Excessive mobile watching
- can cause accommodative spasm & constant irritating eyes & headaches.
- Dry eyes is also common in them leading to constant rubbing with frequent eye boils & infections.
TV Watching
- Effects same as of watching computers.
- Don’t watch in totally dark room.
- Watch at maximum possible distance.
- Avoid reflections off the TV screen.
Reading
- Proper posture during reading is must.
- Avoid physical strain while reading.
- 30 cm (1 foot) is the normal reading distance.
- Keep book at a lower level than the chin.
- Proper illumination avoids straining the eyes.
- Avoid reflections off the glossy pages of book.
Refractive Errors (e.g. Myopia)
- Family history is important.
- Vitamin-A has no role.
- Very unequal glasses power in two eyes can make one eye lazy for the lifetime, if not treated before 7 years of age.
- Eye screening before 7 years is thus must for every child.
- One eye weakness may not be known, always regularly check yourself with one eye closed at a time.
Eye-Drops
- No panacea eye drops are there in the world.
- No need for any eye-drops for normal eyes.
- Lubricants may be used for computer & mobiles related dryness.
- No eye-drops are useful for cataract.
Common Eye Diseases
- India harbours maximum number of blinds in the world (around 25 million people)
- Cataract (Safed motea) is common disease of old age. Surgery is the only treatment.
- Glaucoma (Kala motea) can cause irreversible blindness.
- Diabetes can be blinding, if goes unchecked in eyes.
How to Prevent Eye Diseases
- Eat healthy, well balanced diet.
- Avoid injuries; use UV filter or polycarbonate glasses.
- Avoid excessive TV, computer & mobile watching.
- Palming soothes the eyes.
- First eye check-up by 5 years of age by an eye-surgeon is must to detect lazy eye, etc.
- Periodic annual checkups required especially after 40 years of age, those using spectacles, those with family history of eye disease, etc.
