1. Retina is like a photographic film, on which image of objects seen is formed and is attached on the inside of the eye like a wallpaper.
2. Central portion of retina has the maximum vision and is called the `Macula'.
3. CSR is a disease of macula affecting young males (20-40 years of age).
4. In CSR, Macula gets swollen (like a blister) due to leakage within its walls.
5. Cause of disease is unknown. Allergy to Tuberculosis bacteria may be a factor in some patients. Patients are commonly tense, anxious & neurotic individuals.
6. Manifestations of disease are blurring of vision, distortion of straight lines or objects appearing smaller in affected eye.
7. Fluorescein angiography (Fluorescein dye injected into hand vein to detect leakage in macula) confirms the diagnosis.
8. Disease is usually self limiting in 2-3 months even without treatment. Steroids should never be given (may aggravate the disease) for treatment, as used to be done earlier.
9. Laser (photocoagulation) is sometimes required to seal the leak if disease does not resolve spontaneously within 3-4 months or under some special situations.
10. Recurrence of disease is common. Chances of recurrence are about 20% in first year. Mild residual damage may sometimes persist throughout the life especially if the disease is of recurring nature.
